If you are taking yoga classes or other forms of instruction to learn yoga, then you have probably come across the yoga headstand. This move is difficult for many people to perform and you yourself are probably suffering from the inability to do yoga headstands because you are reading this article.
In this article, we will discuss why you can barely do a headstand for more than a second before falling over. Then we we will tell you how you can become upside without any problems.
#1. Fear of falling over
One of the biggest reasons why you might be against doing headstands is that you are afraid of falling. The sensation of falling over while doing a headstand is one that can make a person feel very vulnerable and helpless.
Don’t let this fear of falling dissuade you from trying to perform headstands. So build up your courage and try a headstand with the support of a wall. Once you are upside down for a few tens of seconds, you will know that your fear of falling was an unfounded fear.
#2. Stabilize your base
It doesn’t matter if you are doing a bound headstand or a tripod headstand (where you place your palms on the ground as support), you need to ensure that your base of support is strong enough to support your weight and stable enough to not wobble and ruin your balance.
Having a stable and strong support base is the primary aspect of successfully doing a headstand for a significant duration.
#3. The upper section of your body may lack enough strength
While doing a proper headstand demands that you have a strong sense of balance, you also need to have a strong upper body. If you think that currently, your upper body is not strong enough, then you will not be able to create and maintain a stable support base.
That’s why you need to build up the muscles in your triceps, biceps and shoulders! You will have to focus on those areas of your muscles that control your upper back, such as by doing push ups or other upper body work-outs.
Once you have practiced the above given points to an adequate level, you will finally reach a mental stage where you will be ready to do a proper headstand for a minute or more. Once you are prepared, build your support base using your palms and then bend yourselves into the headstand position using any of the various yoga methods to achieve that position.
